The Amazing Marvel's Spider-Man Debut is Here!

Reddit

This past Friday saw the preview season for Magic: The Gathering - Marvel's Spider-Man kick into full gear with an epic debut panel! This panel took place at PAX West and was revealed to Magic players everywhere in the afternoon/evening (in the US, at least) and gave players their first real look at the elements behind the set.

Spider-Man Noir
Guy in the Chair

Previously, we'd already gotten our first look at the set at the end of July during San Diego Comic-Con. Several cards were shown with over 100 unique versions being revealed thanks to the release of the set's various welcome decks. With this new debut panel, though, we got a deeper look at several villains, mechanics, draft archetypes, bonus sheet cards, and more. Let's jump in and have a look!

With many of the various Spider-People cards being revealed throughout the First Look, this time the focus early on was determined to be centered around the villains. The stream kicked off with a lock at Eddie Brock // Venom, Lethal Protector, highlighting Brock's rivalry with Peter Parker and his eventual transformation into Venom. Noting how the character often alternates between hero, villain, and anti-hero, the card is both a hero and villain rather than one or the other.

The next aspect of this part of the debut focused heavily on the Sinister Six group of villains, highlighted by the mass reanimation spell Behold the Sinister Six! Each of the original run of Sinister Six characters were shown off. These included the following:

These represent only a fraction of the villains shown, with several shown before and after!

Next came the discussion of the mechanics. Spider-Man India was revealed, highlighting the brand new web-slinging mechanic. This allows you to cast spells by returning tapped creatures you control to their owner's hand. Next came Costume Closet, emphasizing the return of the popular modified mechanic from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Last but not least, we see connive come back again - its first return to Standard since Streets of New Capenna and a fitting mechanic for villains of all kinds. This also works great with the new mayhem mechanic - a riff on madness without the weird timing issues that come with madness.

After the mechanics discussion came a quick overview of each of the set's draft themes. This set features only five primary themes, owing to it being both a smaller release as well as a pick-two draft format. These draft themes include:

  • Selesnya: Web-slinging
  • Azorius: Modified
  • Dimir: Connive
  • Gruul: Big Things (large creatures)
  • Rakdos: Mayhem

These themes should offer plenty of fun things to do with this unique format when it releases!

Speaking of cool unique things for draft (and Limited in general) the set also contains a special bonus sheet full of iconic Magic cards using equally iconic Spider-Man art. This subset - dubbed Borderless Source Material Cards utilize classic artwork from the original Marvel comics in a small number of boosters for players to open. These include everything from the famous Amazing Fantasy #15 cover art on Heroic Intervention to legendary art by beloved artist Todd McFarlane. There's even a Shock fittingly featuring Spider-Man villain Shocker on it!

In addition to the source material being used for a special set of reprints, a small selection of cards in the main set also get to showcase classic comic covers. While we previously saw this treatment on Peter Parker // Amazing Spider-Man and Miles Morales // Ultimate Spider-Man, we now get our third version of this treatment for the newly revealed Eddie Brock // Venom, Lethal Protector. These are undoubtedly going to become beloved variants for collectors everywhere in the near future.

As a continued nod to these classic comics, several cards also use a comic paneling style with comic-style artwork. There are several of these, including The Clone Saga which was first revealed along-side the comic art variant here. These cards provide yet another sweet option for fans everywhere.

As one final round of collectable Booster Fun coolness, Wizards showed off several versions of the Spectacular Spider-Man cards. Each of these shows an alternate costume or style up to and including the silly Bag-Man outfit. All of these alternate versions are special extra rare variations found exclusively in collector boosters.

Finally, a Spider-Man secret lair was announced, featuring a number of classic cards being represented as

While the Secret Lair may have wrapped up previews for the debut stream, a few more previews also trickled through over the weekend. Prior to PAX as a whole, J. Jonah Jameson was revealed, showing off an extremely fitting card for the character. Then after the debut stream, we got the sweet pair of cards in Pictures of Spider-Man and Steel Wrecking Ball.

All these cards and more can be preordered at your local game store along with sealed product and more! Check with your LGS and preorder some goodies today, or even check out the set's page right here on CoolStuffInc to lock them in now!
