After a rousing two weeks of reveals, preview season for Avatar: the Last Airbender is over and done with! Everything from both the main set and the Eternal Legal Cards secondary set have been shown off with the official card image gallery completing as of today.
With several hundred new cards coming to Magic, there's a lot to get excited over! Today, I'm going to look over some of the cooler reveals from the second week of preview season. There's a ton to cover, so let's not waste time and get right to it!
A Look At Jumpstart
Avatar: the Last Airbender is the first non-core set Standard release in some time to lack a Commander set. It makes up for that, though, in its additional Jumpstart set. All the remaining cards were revealed earlier this week, so let's kick things off by looking at some of them!
A critical element to Jumpstart sets of the past has been the various legendary creatures included. Avatar: The Last Airbender is no exception. With only so much room in the main set for legends and a distinct lack of Commander decks, many characters left out get a second chance here. Favorites like Tui and La, Bosco, and The Blue Spirit all get cards, as do each of Jet's freedom fighters and the musicians from the Secret Tunnel episode. If you've got a character you love, chances are they show up here!
There's also a lot of epic new cards among the previews as well. For example, Tectonic Split lets you sacrifice half your lands for a massive payoff - provided you still have the lands leftover to make it work. Waterbender's Restoration acts as a mass flicker effect, which both works well for decks looking to utilize these effects as well as the waterbending mechanic itself. Lastly, Lost in Memories truly tests the limits of the text box, allowing your creatures to set off a Snapcaster Mage effect when they deal damage.
(card pics: That's Rough Buddy, Nightmares and Daydreams)
A couple fan-favorite moments also made it in thanks to this set. I know many were hoping to get a "That's Rough Buddy" nod, as it's a classic meme moment from the show, and thankfully it got a card here. So too did the silly Nightmares and Daydreams episode, which depicts the humorous scene where Momo and Appa become samurai and start battling one another. These are just a few of the moments shown, with many also appearing on reprints (more on those in a bit).
Sweet New Cards
While the Jumpstart cards certainly made up a significant chunk of the week's reveals, that doesn't mean there weren't other awesome cards previewed as well! Here's a couple highlights:
I've gotta admit, it's been some time since I had as sharp of a laugh as I did when I saw this card. As far as mythic rares go, this one just looks downright absurd, as a 0/30 for 8 with one simple ability, it just doesn't seem like much. However, it represents an extremely flavorful card that also is excellent Commander fodder as well.
Here we have the obvious shenanigans card of the set. Koh is a very sweet and interesting build-around that asks what can you do with a number of exiled creatures? Obviously, when you get into the world of Commander, the possibilities become endless. Even in something like Standard, though, there can prove to be some really interesting things you can get up to - especially if a certain black mage isn't banned on Monday.
Blood Moon? In Standard in 2025?!
Well, it's sadly not quite as likely as you might think. Getting to seven mana to activate the Blood Moon effect is a really tall order. As a result, you probably won't see it used as often as you'd like. Still, Blood Moon effect aside, a 2-drop that taps nonbasic lands when they enter is a big deal, meaning it's likely to be a solid roleplayer in many formats.
Speaking of powerful roleplayers, Mai, Scornful Striker should be giving flashbacks to many longtime players. It feels very much like a good old Eidolon of the Great Revel, only here you can play around it by minimizing the noncreature spells you play to lower your own damage output. It's a great foil to many decks that have shown up in various formats over the last few years and should prove excellent.
It's been over a decade since we got a no frills, straight up Rampant Growth into Standard. Not only do we get Rampant Growth out of the deal, though, but it's now potentially better as a lesson! This got tons of people talking excitedly right away about the possibilities, as it's no doubt going to make some waves in Standard soon.
Reprints!
While we didn't get any real Commander decks, that doesn't mean we don't get tons of sweet reprints with this set!
The most obvious group of reprints are the borderless Source Material cards, utilized in similar ways to the bonus sheets for Final Fantasy and Marvel's Spider-Man. While some of these are fun and flavorful, like the Ember Island Players as Clone or Princess Yue for Imprisoned in the Moon, many have criticized the cards at the same time for a perceived low quality. In addition, some have even been compared to other cards with similar art, such as the reprint of Black Sun's Zenith that has nearly identical art to the promo version of Day of Black Sun.
Nevertheless, the subset boasts some pretty sweet cards. For example, Portal: Three Kingdoms cards like Empty City Ruse, Taunting Challenge, and Diaochan, Artful Beauty all get big reprints here. Others like Cityscape Leveler, Drannith Magistrate, and Sakashima of a Thousand Faces all get much needed reprints here as well. Despite the contention over the quality, it's hard to deny that there are still a lot of good cards being reprinted this way.
A number of classic cards are also getting cool new art reprints thanks to the Jumpstart release in addition to the many new ones. Most of these are solid roleplayers as opposed to heavy hitter cards, though players will certainly be excited for new printings of cards like Cloudshift, Brainstorm, and Bolt Bend. Many of these depict fan favorite moments that otherwise aren't depicted much in the main set, which makes them all the more fun to see here.
The real gems come from the Commander Bundle. To make up for a lack of Commander decks with this set, Wizards made sure to juice the Commander Bundle with multiple heavy hitter cards. Each comes with three staple cards - Arcane Signet, Sol Ring, and Swiftfoot Boots - as well as two out of ten special reprints. These include a set of 5 powerful tutors and the five free spells from Commander 2021. This makes for a juicy bundle - provided you can get your hands on one!
Last but not least, following the reveal of the Cabbage Merchant's "My Cabbages!" Secret Lair last week, the rest got shown off this week! In addition to the previously revealed one, four more lairs were shown off. "Everything Changed" largely focuses on ways the Fire Nation impacted the world, while "A Lot to Learn" shows Aang and examples of him learning important lessons throughout the series. "One With the Elements" highlights the Elemental Showcase frame and finally, "The Ember Island Players" plays up the goofy recap episode toward the series' end.
Each lair goes on sale November 17th. Check out the additional resources below for more info on all the cards and pricing!
