Building Around Aetherdrift's Captain Howler, Sea Scourge in Commander

Hello happy Commander multiplayer afficionados! I've got your next build around our first leader just spoiled last week from Aetherdrift called Captain Howler, Sea Scourge!

Captain Howler, Sea Scourge

This Izzet Shark Pirate four-drop 5/4 has two wards to help protect it a bit early a ward 2 mana and life too. Then when you discard one or more cards a dork you control gets +2 power and then when it smashes face you can draw that sweet sweet card! Win, swing and draw and self-protect in an on curve Izzet Shark! I hope you can see why it's my top choice to build around first! We are building around cycling here.

Mana, Lands, Rocks and Ramp

Let's start with my boring mana, ramps, rocks and lands! You need this to cast your stuff, but few are great here. The Red enchantment costs two and then gives your land cycle of a red mana. Great here! It also cycles too. The land taps for both colors and then counts as a Mountain and Island too with surveil one on arrival to dig or drop in your graveyard. Love it loads! Every dual with both colors is here save for Volcanic Island.

The colorless common Shardless Outlander costs seven for a 6/5 beater with trample and then basic land cycling for two-mana for that land fixing! Then Ruin Grinder has menace and 7/4 body, so still evasion. It has a death trigger for everyone to Wheel of Fortune if they want, card draw! It's also got mountaincycling for any of them, not just basics. Love that here and that's why I tossed in all duals. I also like evasion here for this duo since you can pump them with your leader and then smash for cards. Love it!

Now let's turn to a trinity of common six-drop land cyclers with evasion! Bedhead Beastie has a 5/6 menace body and mountaincycling for two. Then Oliphaunt is on a splashable 6/4 body with trample and an attack trigger to pump one of my dorks with +2 power and then also trample too! Love that synergy with Captain Howler and then note that's trample too unlike him. The Blue Tidal Terror has a 5/6 body for six mana and islandcycling for two this time. When it swings you can tap two dorks to give it unblockable this turn.

Now let's turn to this discard from your hand land set. The Red channel one is legendary, ETBs untapped and then channels for no more than four to make a pair of tokens to block or swing that have haste. I also have the bouncing Blue channel one too. The colorless basic land cycler is here to get them all! The last one is in the same set as Captain Howler ETBs tapped, taps for colorless and one color of your choice, and then cycles for three.

Now let's turn to synergetic and looting card draw. Bonders' Enclave will tap with three to draw that sweet card if you have a four or more power, easily done with our leader! The colorless tapping legendary land Geier Reach Sanitarium will tap with two to have everyone draw and then discard. Desolate Lighthouse will tap for colorless and then tap with Izzet and another mana to draw and then discard. I also tossed in Avishkar Raceway in this set for max speed and starting your engines and War Room.

Castle Embereth will often ETB tapped and then can be tapped with three to grow your stuff by one power each. Horizon of Progress will tap for a life lost to tap for mana of your lands and then tap with three to drop a land from your hand tapped, and then tap with one to sac and draw that card to dig for an answer to save your life. It's here to drop that land in case you draw more than one or just ramp you.

I needed a win con in land form like the Castle but that needs bodies and the Blue tapping land Hall of Storm Giants is a body! You can spend six mana to make a 7/7 with ward 3 land Giant to smash all up and down the street!

Fun Cycling Stuff

Now let's turn to fun cycling stuff I am built around. The Red cycling two five-drop uncommon 4/4 is first with that ETB exile a cycler in your graveyard and cast it this turn. Note you will need to still cast it. The seven-mana Red rare with trample, haste and a 8/8 body is next!! Nasty game winner and with that cycling two and cycle trigger you can shuffle it back into your library and then after the fourth time, cast it for free!

The five-cost legendary Monstrosity of the Lake has a 4/6 body and then islandcycling for two. When it ETBs you can mana sink five and then and then tap all dorks your foes control and toss a stun counter on them, great for right before you swing for those cards. The uncommon four-drop 2/4 Avian Oddity with flying is next. It cycles for three and then tosses a flying counter on one permanently to surprise block a flyer with a grand dork and then swing over grounded stuff in the future.

The common Red drop 4/4 five-mana has an ETB trigger to keep two from blocking this turn, again, great with attacking for cards. Or you can cycle it for two-mana to also stop one blocker cycle trigger. The uncommon one-drop from Aetherdrift too is last! It has a 1/1 body and then tosses those +1/+1 counters to grow it as you discard stuff. Then you can cycle it too!

Synergies and Winning Conditions

Let's turn to synergies and backup win cons outside of our Red zone swings! The five-drop rare enchantment turns your cycling of nonland into exiling from your library, and then cast one for free with the same type, and then load the rest to the bottom of your library. Nasty good! The six-drop Blue rare enchantment has a non-creature cast trigger to make a X/X flyer dork with size equal to your cost, and then it can cycle at instant speed to make one. The artifact two-drop reduces your cycling costs by two each! Love it much here. You will too!

The two-drop 2/2 Drannith Stinger will turn your cycling of cards into a damage for each foe. It's also got that cycling. The rare Glint-Horn Buccaneer turns discards into a damage to all foes sure, and then you can spend two-mana to discard and draw for triggers but only if swinging. That haste helps. The four-drop legendary dork Brallin, Skyshark Rider has a 3/3 body and turns discards into +1/+1 counters here, and then pings to all foes. You can also spend a red to give a Shark trample this turn like our leader or Marauding Mako.

Now let's turn to win cons in the red zone. The three-drop Blue enchantment will turns your cycles and discards into 2/2 Drake dorks with flying if you spend a mana. The two-drop artifact will tap to discard and then give your dork unblockable this turn to smash and draw. That discard to give it will trigger and then you can draw to replace it by spending two when this is untapped.

Now let's turn to a backup nondamage way to win the game - milling!!!!!! The Modern legal three-drop Mystic Redaction will turn your discards into each foe milling two and then in your upkeep scry 1! Then the triple-Blue sorcery Fractured Sanity will have them each mill 14 and then cycles for four cards instead.

Now let's turn to this Red creature duo each with 3/3 bodies! The former costs four and has three triggers for your discarding one for each type Was is a dork? Toss a +1/+1 counter here. Was it a land? Make a Treasure! Was it something else? It fights like removal. The latter three-drop legendary lady has menace in evasion and then an attack trigger to discard and then draw, nice card flow and then trigger!!! Then she can turn discards of nonlands into Junk tokens to impulse one, but just once/turn.

I have a huge number of discards here in this brew, and Telekinetic Bonds will turn them all into untaps with a two-mana investment. This also works for opposing discards too like their own Big Score effects. Then you can untap Nykthos to make a ton of mana infinitely, or untap beaters for blocking outta nowhere or untapping dorks and artifacts with tap abilities to Loot like we'll see below or that above Key to the City which taps with a discard so you can keep it up and then you can draw with its cards too or just get more than one unblockable thing, love this loads.

Since I am in Blue, I started with counters that either can cycle if not needed like Miscalculation or cycle counter triggers to get both counters and card draw and triggers. The best is the three-cost dork above for 3/1 flying with flash and cycling three. You can cycle it to counter an ability you don't control. Or flash it to block or kill an attacking flyer out of nowhere. The next best is the enchantment that costs eight normally for countering the next three things by foes but it's here to counter for six mana. The best hard counter cycler is the three-drop above that counters anything or can be cycled for two.

Now let's turn to this removal section! The best is the seven-drop Aura Lay Claim that steals what it enchants or cycles for two early or if you cannot cast it. The five-cost instant Deem Worthy will shoot any creature for seven damage, killing most things, or you can cycle it for four and still Shock it.

Now let's finish this section with mass removal! The three-cost Sweltering Suns shoots all things for three damage and then cycles for three. The instant-speed X-spell Starstorm shoots all dorks for X damage and then you can base that on your board position to save what's needed. It also cycles for three too. The seven-drop trample Rampaging War Mammoth dork cycles for three and then X and destroys X artifacts so you can really punish folks at instant speed. Please don't hit mana rocks that people need to cast their stuff like Arcane Signet.

Now let's finish with the boring card drawing. I am usually using cycler spells with mass card drawing over Looting, like Thirst for Knowledge. This five-cost sorcery draws you three and then islandcycles for one-mana. The six-cost instant draws you three too and basic landcycles this time for two. The sorcery for six draws you four and then cycles for one this time.

The six-drop Blue rare enchantment New Perspectives draws you three on arrival, and then your cycling costs are free with a full grip. The cycling two-mana uncommon enchantment Reconnaissance Mission will turn face smashes with your dorks into cards draw, sorta like what Captain Howler is doing but for all of our dorks. Then the three-drop Zephyr Scribe dork taps with a Blue to draw and discard to trigger and untaps for free with that casting nondorks.

The four-drop Blue Sphinx has an on-curve 4/4 body and then cycles for one. Then when you cycle or discard you scry one for better card flow. The uncommon one-drop rare turns discards into exiles and then you can tap it with two to draw and discard and then tap this with four and sac it to return all exiled things back. The one-drop rare turns discards into exile too, taps for two to draw and discard for triggers and then you can tap it for nothing to reload it and either get a Treasure token or Rogue 2/2 token.

The Red two-drop dork Conspiracy Theorist has an attack trigger to spend one and discard and draw, triggers! Then when you discard nonland stuff you can exile and cast them this turn, love that here!! The Blue six-mana dork All-Seeing Arbiter has flying, and a 5/4 body. When it attacks or ETBs? Draw two, discard one, trigger your stuff. Then when you discard you can drop opposing stuffs power for a turn equal to your mana value count in that graveyard of yours.

Matzalantli, the Great Door that transforms into The Core is last. It taps for no mana to draw and discard, triggering you! Then you can transform it for a four-mana tap into the Core if you've got enough different permanent types in your graveyard. It's okay tapping for that count of mana. With all of your discard and cycle and that that's pretty easy to do.

There we go! With that The Core added that's 39 lands base and then the flip one added in for 61 total cards. Love this leader way much! Would you add in more discarding Looters like Merfolk Looter or more? My build of this guy stays away from classics save Sol Ring like Cyclonic Rift or Blasphemous Act, which I love doing. My last card pulled was Cunning Survivor. You could you add in Fiery Fall, Ominous Seas, flyer Primoc Escapee, or Raking Claws to give a dork double strike to kill outta nowhere. Hollow One? I felt I didn't have enough cycling instant/sorceries for Spellpyre Phoenix, but you might. Let me know how you are building around this fun Shark Pirate!
