My New Mutagen Man Brew

Reddit

The newly released TMNT set came with a new type of token, the Mutagen. Ever since Treasures and Clues, we've had tons of these. Casual afficionados like me adore these random token updates since they provide more value over time and have tons of utility for different strategies.

These tokens tap for 1 mana to sac at Sorcery speed and toss a +1/+1 counter on something as they go. I am trying out a mono-Green brew to see what I can do with them.

Although we could go Simic ([mana]{U}/{G}{/mana]) here, too. When you see my Commander, you'll see why I went mono-Green.

Meet Mutagen Man

Mutagen Man, Living Ooze

Here he is!

Mutagen Man is a really fun, 2/3 Ooze Mutant with Trample. He's got a cost of xgg.

The X that we pay makes us that number in Mutagen tokens. Late in the game, we can tap out and flood the board with them to swing for the win. On top of that, he makes all of our Artifact tokens' activated abilities cheaper by 1.

We'll just need to find ways to make the rest of that manam which is the easiest thing to do in Green, right?

This brew should play like a Token Good Stuff deck, with our Mutagens, Food tokens, and Clues; I focused on cards designed to benefit from these dropped costs and a few that care about +1/+1 counters.

Mana, Ramp, & Lands

Jaheira, Friend of the Forest
The Earth Crystal

Let's kick off our 99 with these powerful cards.

Jaheira, Friend of the Forest is a Legendary Elf Druid at 2/3. She'll cost us 2g but she turns all tokens into little mana elves that we can tap for a Green. She's great here.

Then, a Legendary Artifact for 2gg, The Earth Crystal, arrives and reduces the cost of all our Green spells by one. On top of that, any time we get +1/+1 counters, we get to double them.

On our turn, we can pay six and put out two +1/+1 counters on one or two creatures, which of course triggers the doubling ability.

Kami of Whispered Hopes
Mona Lisa, Science Geek
Viridian Joiner

Next up are these three dorks that tap for big mana, all equal to their power - all no brainers for this deck.

Kami of Whispered Hopes is a three-drop 1/1 Spirit. Thanks to its abilities, it broke Standard during its time. It doubles counters on any Creature of our choice and, of course, taps for mana equal to its power.

Then, the Legendary lady from TMT, Mona Lisa, Sciene Geek, is a 1/3 for three and she has Reach. She also costs 2g and, along with mana, could be a great source of defense with a few counters.

Viridian Joiner is a 1/2 that only taps for Green but that's not a problem for us here. I also threw in Gyre Sage.

Fertilid
Fertilid's Favor

Fertilid and Fertilid's Favor are next.

Fertilid itself is a common three-drop Elemental that arrives with two counters, so a 2/2. You can pull off one counter any time and pay two to grab a basic Land from your library and put it in tapped. With our leader and other support, this could be a big advantage.

Fertilid's Favor is an Instant. It lets "target player" search for a land and put it in tapped, and add two counters to an Artifact or Creature; the two together offer a bit of a combat trick.

Horizon Explorer
Sentinel of the Nameless City

Here are two more Creatures that can make tokens and help with ramp.

At 2/4, Horizon Explorer is an Insect Scout that makes it so all our lands enter untapped. We also get a Lander token every time we swing, which can be sacrificed to search for more lands.

Sentinel of the Nameless City is a 3/4 with Vigilance for 2g. He comes with an Enter the Battlefield (ETB) trigger and combat trigger, making us Map tokens.

Sarinth Steelseeker
The Shire
Secluded Starforge

Some Lands and another Creature are next.

For 1g, we get Sarinth Steelseeker. He's a 1/2, which isn't much, but his ability is where he shines. Whenever we play an Artifact, we can scry one; if it's a Land, we can play it or bin it.

Then, The Shire, a legendary Land that taps for Green. Most of the time, we will be able to play this untapped and we can also use it to generate Food tokens by paying 2 mana and tapping down a Creature.

Secluded Starforge is a Land that I adore. We can tap it for colorless mana or with 5 to make a 2/2 Robot token. What we need it for, though, is paying 2 to tap X Artifacts and pump all our Creatures +X/+0/

We can only do it at Sorcery speed, but that's a nasty wincon there and we don't even have to sac anything.

Fountainport
Treasure Vault
The Gold Saucer

Let's finish with these three lands that don't tap for Green.

One of my favorite token-caring Land is first in this batch, Fountainport. It can give us colorless mana but we can also pay 3 and a life to make a 1/1 Fish token.

If we want to hold onto our life, we can tap for 2 and sac a token to get a card or 4 and make a Treasure.

Treasure Vault, an Artifact Land is a massive mana sink that taps for colorless, but it also taps for XX and we can sacrifice it to make X Treasures.

Then, The Gold Saucer is a Town that arrives untapped. Along with 2 mana, we can tap it to flip a coin for a Treasure token. For 3 and two Artifacts, we get a card.

Synergies

The Ooze
Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11

It's time for some synergies and wincons.

The Ooze is a Legendary Artifact for 2. It takes all the counters from Creatures that are dying (or leaving the battlefield), and turns each of them into a Mutagen token.

For 1g, we can play this Legendary Mutant Ninja Turtle, Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11. He's a 1/1 that arrives with a Mutagen in tow, and doubles counters on our dorks while he's here.

Michelangelo, Mutant BFF
Mona Lisa, Ever Adaptable

Two more Creatures are next: Michelangelo, Mutant BFF, for 2gg and Mona Lisa, Ever Adaptable for 3g.

Michelangelo is an Uncommon 4/4 and this one also arrives with a Mutagen. When this card hits the table and any time we swing with it, we'll get to make another one. It also boosts all our Creatures with counters: they can only be blocked by one creature.

Mona Lisa is a Rare, Legendary Lizard Mutant. She comes in as a 4/4, so she's a solid blocker but she is also our best Mutagen maker in the deck if you play it right.

She makes it so any time that any player casts a Creature spell, we get to put another token on our side.

Roadkill Rodney
Biogenic Ooze

Now we've got these guys.

Roadkill Rodney is a two-drop Robot with a Squad cost of 3 and he's up first. As it arrives, we can make Squad copies and they're all 2/1s with Deathtouch.

Rodney has a combat damage trigger there for more Mutagens.

Biogenic Ooze is a 2/2 that enters the battlefield with a free 2/2 Ooze token copy by its side. For 1ggg, we can mana sink and make these tokens over and over again.

While it's on the board, we'll get to toss a +1/+1 on all Oozes every end-steps. Not bad.

Parallel Lives
Branching Evolution
Primal Vigor

For some more synergy, all of these Enchantments double our stuff.

The four-drop, Parallel Lives, doubles our tokens for us; so it's like a cheaper version of Primal Vigor at 4g.

But that extra 1 mana gets us such a bonus. Primal Vigor doubles all our tokens too.

Branching Evolution doubles up our counters; then, I also tossed in Doubling Season.

Evolution Witness
Slurrk, All-Ingesting

Evolution Witness is a 2/1 Elf Shaman for 2g. We can Adapt for 2 mana any time there's no counters on her and as they arrive, we can pur a permanent from the graveyard to our hand.

I love that we can do this over and over again.

This is a nasty one for this deck, Slurrk, All-Ingesting. He comes in as a 5/5 due to counters. If he dies, or whenever another Creature does, we get to put a counter on everything that already has at least one.

Ouroboroid
Communal Brewing

Ouroboroid is here. This is a 1/3 Plant Wurm with a useful ability. Each combat, we can double our counters on everything. Then comes Communal Brewing.

This is a three-drop Enchantment that has every opponent draw a card and stacks itself up with ingredient counters. Then, as we cast spells that are Creatures, we will gain however many cards we gifted in counters.

In a bigger game, I really like this one.

Ochre Jelly
Spike Weaver

These are both pretty fun, and we've got the classic Spike Weaver.

The Ochre Jelly X-cost Ooze has Trample in and arrives with X size from counters. As it dies, we get to make two half size copies! This has great synergy with doublers and increasers.

The four-drop Spike arrives with three counters, and then distributes them to others for 2 mana each, or will pull one off to prevent damage for a turn.

We can load this up with counters to use as protection for us and our dorks, keeping us from dying.

I also tossed in Spike Feeder to gain a pair of life for each counter pulled off, at no mana cost.

Kurbis, Harvest Celebrant
Arcade Cabinet

First up, Kurbis, Harvest Celebrant, an xgg Legendary Creature who would likely make a good Commander himself. Whatever you spend in mana here will load him up with counters. Heads up, that's not just the X value.

We can pull counters off here to fog all damage for target Creature with counters.

Then, the three-drop artifact here is massive. When Arcade Cabinet arrives, we can toss a +1/+1 counter on up to four Creatures.

After that, we can pay 2 and tap it to double our counters on something. Nasty, right?

Stridehangar Automaton
Peregrin Took
Mirrormind Crown

Let's finish synergies here.

Stridehangar Automaton is a 1/4 colorless Construct and it's really fun. It'll turn arriving Artifact tokens into an additional 1/1 Flying Thopter for free. We only get one per time they enter, but there's no limits on repeating it.

And then this is a lord for them too and pumps them at +1/+1.

Peregrin Took is a cute Legendary 2/3 that will add free Food tokens any time tokens enter the battlefield, once per time here too. That Food triggers the Automaton, so it's perfect.

Then that four-drop Equipment with a 2 Equip cost is nasty here and it's new from this year, too.

As long as this is equipped? The first time we make tokens on a turn we'll instead make them copies of the Creature wearing the Mirrormind Crown. This is pretty strong from where I am looking. Really, it's strong at all of the angles, but you shouldn't put it on any Legendaries.

Answers

Inspiring Call
District Mascot
Steelbane Hydra

If we're going to have a chance, we need some answers.

I adore Heroic Intervention as a great answer to all sorts of junk or a combat trick so, it was here first.

But let's take a closer look at these three. Inspiring Call is a three-mana Instant that lets us draw a card for every Creature with a counter on it. It also gives them indestructible until the end of the turn to shut down any shenanigans.

I've always got some Creatures that are just here for removal. The one-drop pupper, District Mascot, arrives with a 1/1 size, saddles with one, and even pumps one as it swings while mounted.

That's fine but he's included because we can pay 1g and remove two counters to destroy target Artifact without sacrificing it.

Steelbane Hydra is next for xgg. It comes in as a 1/1 Turtle Hydra but it's here because if we pay 2g, we can destroy an Artifact or Enchantment.

It costs one less counter than the doggo, and it triggers again and again, so it's great here.

Triskelion
Walking Ballista

Now, some more removal we can pay for by pulling off counters, but this time, with no mana cost. Both of these are Construct Artifact Creatures, Triskelion and Walking Ballista.

Triskelion is a six-drop 1/1 that comes in with three +1/+1 counters on it, so sort of a 4/4. On our turn, we can remove one counter to deal one damage to any target. This is great synergy because it's stackable, and we can pile this dork up with counters.

Then Walking Ballista, an XX, enters with X amount of counters. He's a good mana sink because we can toss more counters on for 4 but, we can also pull them off to ping any target for one.

In this mad mana brew, that's strong stuff.

Acidic Slime (Marauding Mutagen)
Mutant Chain Reaction

We finish up our answers with these two fun things.

Marauding Mutagen is just Acidic Slime in Turtle mode but it's a solid option here. For 3gg, we get a 2/2 with Deathtouch.

I love the ETB trigger here, too, destroying a Land, Enchantment, or Artifact.

Then that fun, three-drop Sorcery, Mutant Chain Reaction, destroys a flyer, Artifact, or Enchantment for us; afterwards, it leaves behind a Mutagen.

Card Draw

High Score
Tireless Tracker

These are a little boring, but we need some card draw.

High Score is a three-cost Enchantment. As long as it's in play, we get to draw a card during our end step if we have the biggest critter on the board. Oh, and it makes that easy because it doubles all our counters, too!

Then I've got Tireless Tracker, a 3/2 Human with Landfall. That means that every time we play a Land, we get something; in this case, we get to create Clue tokens. Our Tracker also gains counters whenever we sac a Clue.

Terrasymbiosis
Selvala, Heart of the Wilds

Another three-cost Enchantment here, Terrasymbiosis draws us cards every time we put counters on our stuff, and we get to draw a card for each counter. We only get to do it once per turn, though.

Selvala, Heart of the Wilds is a Legendary Elf Scout. As a 2/3 for 1gg, she's mostly here for her abilities. She can tap with just g to make any color of mana.

But, she makes X mana, where X is our largest dork's power. Here, that is extremely powerful. Also, while she's on the board, she offers card draw when you play a Creature stronger than anything on the board.

Stocking the Pantry
Mindless Automaton

Now, let's turn to these last few card-draw synergies.

Stocking the Pantry is a one-drop Enchantment that gains Supply Counters every time we put counters on Creatures we control. When we need it, we can pay 2 to remove a Supply Counter and draw a card.

Last up is Mindless Automaton, an Artifact Creature for 4 mana. He comes in with two +1/+1 counters. We can pay 1 and discard to put more counters on him.

When needed, we can remove two of those counters and get a card. With our Commander, or a card like Doubling Season, that's mad card draw for us.

How the Deck Turned Out

Let's take a look at the deck as a whole.

My New Mutagen Man Brew | Commander | Abe Sargent

Card Display

As you can see, we ended up with tons of great cards in the finished product from Nykthos to Inventor's Fair. We have card draw covered with War Room and Bonders' Enclave.

We also have a lot of synergy. Gingerbread Cabin makes a Food token. Killer Service makes us a Food token for every opponent we have as an ETB ability, and then lets us sac them to gain three life each. Then, every end step, we can pay to create a 4/4 Rhino token if we'd like.

Transmutation Font is great, too. We can tap it for free to make one of three different tokens, or pay 3 and tap to sacrifice three different tokens and search our library for an Artifact.

There are tons more cards we could add in too. You can take this one anywhere and mutate it to your liking.
