The Top Commander Cards from 2024

Reddit

Hello happy folks, I hope your day is going incredibly well! Today I wanted to look at my favorite new cards from this past year for Commander specially, as well as multiplayer generally too. This includes sets like Assassin's Creed, Fallout, Modern Horizons 3 and Foundations and its Jumpstart. This is just my list, yours is just as valid.

#18. The Overlord Cycle

Overlord of the Hauntwoods

Let's get this thing started! This cycle that debuted in Duskmorrow is first! They are Titans with an ETB and attack trigger on an on curve stuff and then they are enchantments for that added synergy and can be cast as just those early of impending and then once the counters are off it arrives as the dork. In color order the White one is a 6/6 body for seven mana, impending four mana for four turns, it makes two 2/1 flyers of the Insect type like a better Grave Titan! The Blue one-costs five for a flying 5/3 with impending for turns and three mana, that draws two and discards one, nice to fill that graveyard and dig!

The Black one Overlord of the Balemurk costs five for a 5/5 with two-cost and impending five turns, that mills four and then you'll raise a dork/planeswalker to your hand from your 'yard. Note it doesn't have to have been milled, so that's great with the Blue one. The Red one-costs six for a 5/5 with impending four turns at four mana, and then it Lightning Blasts a target, so you can kill anything from dorks to players. The Green one is my fave! Why? It costs five, impending four turns for three mana. You make a land that counts as every basic land type, so it taps for everything! It's also a cheap impending.

#17. The Surveil Dual Lands

Lush Portico

Hello happy mana needing folks! I know that lands on an article like this might be a bit...boring...I get it! But this great 10 card cycle is worth it for a few reasons! First they count as duals so you can fetch them out with things like Three Visits and fetchlands like Polluted Delta. Then these surveil 1 on arrival to the battlefield, so they can give you card draw security, and then also send it to the graveyard if you don't immediately need it, or just want reanimation, flashback or delirium for later use. So, it's sort of like adding it to your second hand. Love it loads, I'm sure you do too!

#16. The New Leylines

Leyline of Hope

There were four new Leylines in Duskmourn and one reprint there the exiling one, and then one five-color one in Murders, Leyline of the Guildpact. All are here! They cost four mana, can be played for free turn one with an opening hand grip, and then typically are good solid value for four later, but rarely broken.

The White one increases life gain by one and then if you have 7 or more life than starting, you'll give your team +2/+2 in size. The Blue one will turn all of your stuff into one creature type, like Conspiracy. The Red one will copy your instants/sorceries that just target your solo stuff, and there is no once turn there either! Great in heroic and Feather stuff. The Green one Leyline of Mutation lets you play your stuff with the alternate one mana of each color option, like Fist of Suns, and this cannot be played outside of that color combo in Commander. Guildpact will give your nonlands all colors and then your lands all basic land types! Great for ramping and color stuff too! But, again, just for 5C Commander stuff. It's my fave here though.

#15. Counterpoint

Counterpoint

This made for Commander five mana counter in Dimir colors is next!!! It will counter anything, then let you cast a free spell from your graveyard with that mana cost or fewer if they are an instant, sorcery, dork or walker of the planes. Love this thing so much!

#14. Insatiable Avarice

Insatiable Avarice

This one-mana tutor/card draw spell costs one base, three to draw three and then lose three life and three total to Vampiric Tutor a card to the top of your library but no life loss base and five mana for both. This is so strong! Love it loads!

#13. Vein Ripper

Vein Ripper

Ah yes...this six-drop mono-Black a little hard to cast with that triple Black is next. It's got a strong 6/5 flying body with ward your foe's have to sac that dork to even target it! Then when another dork dies, a foe will lose 2 life and you'll gain it, like Blood Artist, but two life not one. Love it much!

#12. Strix Serenade

Strix Serenade

This one-cost counter variant can counter artifacts, dorks and planeswalkers. Then they are left with a 2/2 flyer Bird. It's great in Commander since you can counter it and then make the replay it with two mana Commander tax!! It's awesome possum!

#11. Smuggler's Surprise

Smuggler's Surprise

This spree-able one mana instant is next! You can spend three to mill four and then return two dorks or lands to your hand from them. Then you can spend six to drop for free two critters in your hand! Then you can spend two mana to give your big-powered stuff indestructible and hexproof to shut down interaction or save from mass removal or chump blocks for the turn. And you can do each or all of them as you need! Great stuff!

#10. The Enduring Cycle

Enduring Courage
Enduring Curiosity
Enduring Innocence

This cycle from Duskmourn is next! Like the Archetypes above these are enchantment critters too in case you care. When these are destroyed, they'll come back once. Let's do them in alpha order - the red one is a four mana version of multiplayer classic In the Web of War that gives your stuff +2 power and haste too. It's also got a 3/3 body. The Blue one is a flashing 4/3 for four mana and your combat damage is converted to card draw like Coastal Piracy. Note this is written for each dork that deals damage.

Enduring Tenacity
Enduring Vitality

The White one-costs three for a 2/1 lifelink that turns ETBs of smaller powered stuff into cards drawn, but just once per turn. The Black one has a 4/3 body on a four mana body that converts life gain from you into life loss of that amount for a foe hard to stop and a combo engine. The last one is the three mana 3/3 on curve Green one with vigilance that gives your team the ability to tap for any color of mana, it too! Love this cycle way much! I'm sure you do too, right? Right!!!

#9. Sunspine Lynx

Sunspine Lynx

This four-mana Cat from Bloomburrow is next! It's got an on curve 5/4 size and no one can gain life while it's out, not you or they. Damage cannot be prevented either. When it arrives, it will Price of Progress each player damage, which was often a kill for many way back when it was printed, given how much Commander folks love their nonbasics. Run this with blink and recursion effects and kill all of the players!

#8. High Fae Trickster

High Fae Trickster

Our latest Core Set MTG Foundations has this four-drop flashy rare! It's got flying and 4/2 body. It gives all of your stuff flash when it's on that sweet sweet battlefield! Then note that many of these only works for some times of cards but this is all of them. Cast it in the foe's EOT and then cast creatures, sorceries and even planeswalkers! Then untap and swing or use them. Love it loads, and if you have tried it out yet? Why not?

#7. The Flare Cycle

Flare of Cultivation
Flare of Denial
Flare of Fortitude

Hello free spell fans! I got you with this five-set of free stuff for the win! The Blue one counters. The Green sorcery costs three and is a Cultivate with a double Green cost. The three-cost Red one will redirect the targets of a spell. The four-cost White one will protect you and the team for the turn by giving them hexproof and indestructible. The Black one Flare of Malice costs four for an instant speed Diabolic Edict for everyone else and then they have to sac the biggest costed one.

#6. Withering Torment

Withering Torment

This three-mana uncommon Black removal spell is next! It's the first spell printed in Black that'll destroy an enchantment at instant speed. It has to be here for that reason! You can also destroy a dork and lose two life.

#5. Final Showdown

Final Showdown

This one-mana instant in White with spree is next and the first one on my top 5! You can add a mana to drop all abilities as a combat trick or to give your dork indestructible too! Then you can spend that 6 mana base to sweep at instant speed and then sweep the board too, and Rout was a 7-mana instant, and was a classic. By combining this you can sweep, keep your Commander and then drop all else, at instant speed despite what abilities they have to keep them up!

#4. Silver Shroud Costume

Silver Shroud Costume

This two-drop flashing equipment is my top scoring Fallout card! It equips for three and then auto-equips on arrival!! Then you can give your thing you just equipped shroud for the turn to save it from targeted removal and then unblockable too!

#3. Sire of Seven Deaths

Sire of Seven Deaths

This seven-costed, colorless seven in the name, seven keywords and 7/7 size is next! Even its creature type is seven letters!!! Sorry it's not hitting the seventh spot...but that would be rough to sell...amiright? This can ward seven life, then vigilance and reach which I love here attacking and keeping back for blocking flyers. Then you can also trample and menace so double evasion there. Love that first strike and then lifelink too, and then this is basically the Akroma of colorless with an epic ton of keywords!

#2. Dawn's Truce

Dawn's Truce

This two-cost way to shut down opposing stuff is next! It's White, and it gives your stuff not just critters it helps and it gives them hexproof base! That's worth it there since White normally gives indestructible or phases out. But you can also give them indestructible for the same cost by gifting someone a card too.

#1. The New Eldrazi Titans

Emrakul, the World Anew
Ulamog, the Defiler
Kozilek, the Broken Reality

I felt I had to have this trio here at my top spot! I'm sure you can see why! The 12-mana Emrakul is 12/12 and you steal all dorks a foe controls - note there is no give them back here. It flies and as a rough to answer protection. You have to wait a turn to answer it. Ulamog cost 10 for a 7/7 that has ward sac two permanents to affect their board and a cast trigger to exile half of a foe's library. Then in grows in size by the greatest value of what was exiled and then has that in annihilator. Kozilek costs 9 for a 9/9 and you'll manifest the two top cards of your library and then draw two cards too, and they'll get +3/+2 in size. It's fair, the other two aren't. Please don't run them in normal Commander outside of cutthroat stuff and metagames.

There we are! I hope that you enjoyed my look at the Top Ten for Commander from 2024, but yours are just as valid, so what are they?
