Today, we are doing my third list of top cards from the TMT set.
I often do these over the course of several weeks after each set is released, rounding up the best cards for all the kitchen table brewers out there. These are cards that would be good in Casual formats whether you're playing one-on-one or at a multiplayer table - from Commander and Five-Color to Type Four, Peasant, and even Pauper.
I've been writing these for decades. Originally, they were solo Top 10 lists, but sets have more cards than ever in recent years. So, I've expanded to cover roughly 20 cards per roundup.
Cards are much more powerful than they used to be, too. Here's some of the most fun, most broken Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cards for casual players.
Honorable Mentions
Leonardo's Technique
Leonardo's Technique costs ![]()
for a Sorcery and has Sneak for ![]()
as an alternate cost. I'm willing to tank that early tempo loss of returning a Creature to my hand for the recursion this spell offers. It brings up to two cheap Creatures back from our Graveyard, which is not bad for four mana. It's great for aggressive brews or even Midrange strategies.
Mikey & Leo, Chaos & Order
Next up we have Mikey & Leo, Chaos & Order, a fun, Selesnya (![]()
) two-drop Legendary Creatures. When you toss counters on a Creature you control, you get your card draw on. Of course, that ability only triggers once a turn. Still, that's great for any decks that work with counters, from +1/+1 to -1/-1 to tons more too. This card is perfect for making sure we keep our hand stocked with cards.
Brilliance Unleashed
When Brilliance Unleashed resolves, we get to make a choice. First, we can deal 5 damage to a Creature. Second, we can bring an Artifact back from our Graveyard. If it's an Artifact Creature, it comes into play normally. If it isn't a Creature, it enters as a 3/3 Robot Artifact Creature with Flying. Third, we can do both! Talk about value.
Mondo Gecko
Mondo Gecko is next up. This fun three-drop Blue 2/3 Legendary Creature can lead up your next Commander brew. It can discard a card for
to change its color and gain Hexproof from that color until the end of the turn. Then, when it deals combat damage to a player, you get to draw a card for each color among permanents you control. This is perfect for formats like Vivid or Five-Color, and is a perfect addition for decks that are three or more colors.
Best TMT Cards for Casual Play
If you're looking to build casual decks that are lots of fun to play, these are the TMNT cards you'll want to include.
15. Saved by the Shell
Anyone who has followed me for any amount of time knows I adore a combat trick that also saves a Creature from removal. Saved by the Shell costs two mana at most, with a
cost reduction if it targets a Turtle. It tosses a +1/+1 counter on our Creature and gives it Trample, Indestructible, and Hexproof. Not only will it survive a removal spell or board wipe, it will also survive a chump block or Trample past a a chump-blocker to kill your opponent.
14. Lord Dregg, Insect Invader
Lord Dregg, Insect Invader is a four-drop 3/2 Legendary Creature with Flying. The card only costs Black mana to cast but has a Green activated ability to sacrifice any token and draw a card. It's like all of your tokens are Clues. You can use him to get value off of Creatures that are going to die anyway, or extra Treasures.
What I really like about Lord Dregg is the Disappear ability to create a free 1/1 Insect Warrior Creature token with Flying at the beginning of your end step if a permanent left your battlefield that turn. He replaces whatever you sacrificed to draw a card with a fresh 1/1 Flyer on your turn, which will often be an upgrade. At the very least it gives you another thing to sacrifice.
13. The Class Cycle
We've got the whole cycle of Class Enchantments next up on our list. Class Enchantments enter play and have a Level 1 ability that takes effect immediately. You can then pay a cost and level them up to add an additional ability at Level 2, and once more at Level 3.
Leader's Talent tosses a +1/+1 counter on an attacking Creature at Level 1, and then you can pay ![]()
to upgrade the Enchantment to Level 2. Now, whenever a Creature you control leaves the battlefield, if it had a counter on it, you gain two life. At Level 3, for an additional ![]()
, you get to place a +1/+1 counter on each Creature you control whenever you cast a spell. All pretty great for Creature and +1/+1 counter strategies
Does Machines starts off by milling us for two, and then Looting two (draw and then discard). So, that's four cards in the Graveyard right away. We can hit Level two for ![]()
and return two Artifacts from our Graveyard to our hand. Level 3 is ![]()
and lets us throw three +1/+1 counters on an Artifact we control at the beginning of combat on our turn. If it isn't a Creature, it becomes a 0/0 Robot in addition to its other types.
Ninja Teen is very strong as it starts off by draining each opponent for one life when one of our Creatures leaves the battlefield. Anything that could cause our Creature to leave the Battlefield will trigger it, not just death. We can spend ![]()
to hit Level 2 and give each of our Creatures +1/+0 and Menace. Finally, we can spend just
to give Creatures in our graveyard a Sneak cost of ![]()
. Now you'll be able to reanimate Creatures using their Sneak cost if you happen to get through for damage (which Menace helps with immensely).
Cool but Rude lets us Rummage (discard and then draw) one card whenever we attack. You can Level it up for ![]()
to turn all of your discards into two damage to each opponent. Those first two abilities work really well together. For another ![]()
we hit Level 3, giving us a Gamble to tutor up a card from our Library and discard a card random.
Party Dude costs
and gives a Food token to each player. At Level 2, for ![]()
, whenever an opponent's Artifact is put into the Graveyard from the Battlefield, we draw a card. Suddenly those Treasure tokens aren't looking so hot. At Level 3, for ![]()
, whenever one or more of our opponents are attacked, we get to give an attacking Creature +X/+X, where X is the number of cards in our hand.
Each of these Class Enchantments bring something interesting to the table for a number of archetypes and give you a lot of options to play with.
12. Hard-Won Jitte
Hard-Won Jitte is a Red Equipment that equips for
. It gives the equipped Creature the highly useful ability Double Strike. Remember this set has tons of Ninjas with Sneak and combat damage triggers, so with this they'll net two triggers.
11. Courier of Comestibles
Courier of Comestibles is a two-drop 1/2 Creature, and it Tutors any Food card to our hand. If you're unable or unwilling to do that, it does just make a Food token. There are only so many cards you could Tutor for with this, but making a Food token on arrival is pretty good on its own.
10. Ravenous Robots
Ravenous Robots has an amazing Young Pyromancer-like effect. Young Peezy makes a 1/1 Red Elemental Creature token whenever you cast an Instant or Sorcery. Ravenous Robots makes a 1/1 Colorless Robot Artifact Creature token whenever you cast an Artifact spell. It's a cast trigger, so the ability will resolve even if the spell is countered.
You can also, tap the Robots for
to give all of your Creature tokens Haste. So, that's better than Pyromancer, but more fragile since Artifact Creatures are susceptible to more kinds of removal.
9. Michelangelo, Mutant BFF
Michelangelo, Mutant BFF is next up. This 4/4 Legendary Creature makes it so your Creatures with counters on them can't be blocked by more than one Creature. When he Enters or attacks, you get to make a Mutagen token which further enables his static ability. Preventing your opponents from profitably gang-blocking your Creatures to take them out is a powerful effect for Green decks.
8. The Cloning of Shredder
The Saga The Cloning of Shredder is next on our list. It arrives, exiles a Creature from our Graveyard, and then makes a token copy of that Creature that isn't Legendary and is a Mutant in addition to its other types. On your two next turns, it make two more token copies of that same Creature.
Casual formats tend to adore Clone effects, and this is a pretty nice one. This one gives your three copies of any Creature in your Graveyard over three turns and it gets around the Legend rule.
7. Kitsune's Technique
Kitsune's Technique is an Instant that costs ![]()
![]()
, but has a Sneak cost of ![]()
. It mills half of one opponent's library. Traumatize was already amazing in Mill brews and this one can come out cheaper for a bit of a tempo hit. The major issue with this card is you can't target your own library to enable things like Flashback or Reanimation. It's not as strong in formats with larger deck sizes like Five Color or Commander, but it can still do work!
6. Leonardo, Sewer Samurai
Leonardo, Sewer Samurai is a four mana 3/3 with Double Strike and a Sneak cost of ![]()
![]()
. Leo lets us cast Creatures with Power or Toughness 1 or less from our Graveyard, but they enter with finality counters on them. He can grab things like Mother of Runes and Esper Sentinel, or even Wall of Omens. That's a lot of potential value.
5. Ooze Spill
Ooze Spill costs the same as Cancel, counters anything, and leaves behind a Mutagen token. If you like extra value from your Counterspells, here's your next option.
4. Northampton Farm
Northampton Farm enters untapped and taps for one Colorless mana. It can also tap for
to exile a Creature you own. For an additional
, you can tap and sacrifice this land to bring back one of the Creatures exiled with it to the battlefield, and then the rest go to your hand. I enjoy having a way to protect Creatures from removal or board wipes, especially when it brings them back later.
3. Karai, Future of the Foot
Karai, Future of the Foot is a ![]()
Legendary 3/3 with Sneak for ![]()
![]()
. She has a great combat damage trigger to return a Creature from our graveyard to our hand. Not bad, sure, but if the Sneak cost was paid, it goes to the battlefield instead. Much better.
2. Pizza Face, Gastromancer
Pizza Face, Gastromancer is Legendary Artifact Creature that enters and makes a Food token. He has a triggered ability to put three +1/+1 counters on another Creature or Artifact if a permanent left the battlefield under your control this turn. If it wasn't a Creature, it becomes a 0/0 Mutant Creature too. He can also tap and sac himself for ![]()
gain 15 life.
1. Weather Maker
Weather Maker is last on today's list. I love a good Manalith, and this is a good Manalith. The Landfall trigger put a counter on Weather Maker. It can tap to add a mana of any color. If you tap it and remove two counters then it makes two Colorless mana. If you tap it and remove three counters from it, it deals 3 damage to any target. That's a lot of options for a mana rock.
Wrapping Up
And there we go! Thanks for reading, and checking these lists out! See you next time for more of the most exciting Casual cards in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
