10 for 10: Ten Cards to Pair with Zurgo Stormrender in Commander

Reddit

Spoiler season for Tarkir: Dragonstorm is in full swing, and this set looks fantastic. There have already been tons of awesome new cards, and Zurgo Stormrender is one that has piqued my interest. This version of Zurgo, which is the face commander for the Mardu Surge deck, is a three-mana 3/3 with two abilities. The first is Mobilize 1, a new keyword that makes 1/1 Red Warrior creature tokens equal to the Mobilize number when that creature attacks, then makes you sacrifice those tokens at the beginning of the next end step. Zurgo also has a static ability similar that triggers whenever a creature dies, drawing you a card if that creature was attacking and pinging each opponent for one damage if it wasn't attacking. These two abilities make Zurgo quite an efficient engine and payoff for token generation/death on its own, but as a commander it could make for a pretty sweet Mardu tokens deck. If that sounds like your cup of tea, then here are my top ten suggestions for cards in the 99.

1. Warren Soultrader

Warren Soultrader

The Mobilize keyword makes tokens that sacrifice themselves at the end of your turn, so finding ways to make use of them while they're around is paramount. There are many different sacrifice outlets and synergies to take advantage of them, but Warren Soultrader is definitely one of the strongest. Trading creatures for mana has proven time and time again to be broken, but the Soultrader takes it a step further by creating mana in the form of treasure tokens. These can be saved for later, and if you're running any token doublers like Anointed Procession or Mondrak, Glory Dominus, you can make even more mana.

2. Caesar, Legion's Emperor

Caesar, Legion's Emperor

I try to sneak at least one Fallout card into every deck I build, and this one has an easy justification. Caesar's abilities to make tokens, draw cards, and deal damage equal to the number of creature tokens you control gives it an incredible amount of utility and flexibility, and all three of these are what token decks want to be doing. The downside of sacrificing a creature is negligible, as Zurgo will give you the token you need each turn if you have Zurgo's trigger resolve first. Oh, and Caesar doesn't even need to be the one attacking to get its trigger, any creature will do.

3. Warleader's Call

Warleader's Call

Warleader's Call is one of the best ways to deal damage in a token deck without needing to attack. For just three mana you get a Glorious Anthem and an Impact Tremors stapled together, nearly tripling your damage output when creating and attacking with 1/1 tokens. This might be the best version of this effect out there and is a no-brainer for a go wide deck like this one.

4. Adeline, Resplendent Cathar

Adeline, Resplendent Cathar

Adeline is one of the most efficient ways to make tokens every turn in Commander, making up to three humans a turn whenever you attack. Having those tokens enter attacking is an upside for Zurgo, as it forces your opponents to choose between taking damage or giving you cards. Clearly, Wizards agreed with my recommendation on this one, as of the ten cards on this list Adeline was the only one to make it into the precon.

5. The Master, Multiplied

The Master, Multiplied

As mentioned before, the biggest downside to Zurgo is that the Mobilize ability make you sacrifice the warrior tokens you make at the beginning of your end step, so it can be difficult to make those tokens stick around. The Master, Multiplied is a great solution to this problem, letting you keep your warrior tokens around by not letting you sacrifice them at the beginning of your end step. It also serves as an army in a can with myriad and the legend rule negation, as long as you can keep attacking with it.

6. Wispdrinker Vampire

Wispdrinker Vampire

This unassuming uncommon from Murders at Karlov Manor sure packs a punch. Like Warleader's Call, this card is like an Impact Tremors combined with another iconic card, this time Soul Warden. It only triggers off small creatures, but most of this deck's token generators make creatures small enough, Zurgo included.

7. Caretaker's Talent

Caretaker's Talent

Caretaker's Talent is a staple in both Standard and Commander, and it does everything you would want to do in a token deck. It provides you with card draw, a token copying ability, and an anthem for when you're ready to alpha strike. Even if you don't level it up, drawing a card whenever Zurgo attacks seems like a pretty good deal on its own.

8. Isshin, Two Heavens as One

Isshin, Two Heavens as One

Isshin is taking a break from leading decks to sit back and play a supporting role for this one. It doubles up on any of the attack triggers in the deck, a particularly useful ability for a commander with a good attack trigger. It gets a lot better when combined with other cards in the deck though, especially the ones that made this list like Adeline, Caesar, or The Master.

9. Breath of Fury

Breath of Fury

Breath of Fury is a unique and interesting card, and it's here because there are a lot of ways to take infinite combats with the right board state. With Zurgo making a new token every time it attacks, all you need is a way to make your creatures unblockable and you can go for the win. Of course, if you already have a wide board, just one extra combat might be enough to finish off the table.

10. Gornog, the Red Reaper

Gornog, the Red Reaper

This Foundation Jumpstart legend cares a lot about warriors, perfect for a deck with a warrior commander that creates warrior tokens. The evasion from the iconic line: "Cowards can't block warriors" is made even more potent when it turns your opponents' creatures into warriors. Then, once you've petrified enough of your opponents' board with cowardice, Gornog can pump up your team for the win.
