10 For 10: Kuja, Genome Sorcerer

Reddit

The Final Fantasy and Magic: The Gathering crossover event is finally here, and with it comes a slew of new legendary creatures for EDH players to sink their teeth into. With over a hundred new legends to choose from, there's something for everyone, and one of the first to catch my attention was Kuja, Genome Sorcerer. This card cares about one thing and one thing only: wizards. It makes a wizard token at the beginning of your end step, which pings each opponent for one damage whenever you cast a noncreature spell. Then, if you control four or more wizards, it transforms into Trance Kuja, which doubles all damage your wizards would deal to players or permanents. These abilities make Kuja the perfect fit for a Rakdos wizard burn deck, and if that sounds like your style then here are ten suggestions for that deck.

Harmonic Prodigy

Harmonic Prodigy

Harmonic Prodigy's ability to double up all triggered abilities of wizards you control may make it the single-most powerful card in a Kuja deck. Kuja's end step trigger? Now you get two Black mage tokens and can transform your commander twice as fast. Cast a noncreature spell with Black mage tokens out? Get double the damage and kill your opponents twice as fast. The tricky part will be avoiding your opponents' removal spells.

Coruscation Mage

Coruscation Mage

Coruscation Mage is not a very complicated card, but sometimes the simplest cards can pack a punch in the right deck. It is essentially a nontoken version of a black mage, dealing one damage to each opponent whenever you cast a noncreature spell. It also has offspring, which makes a 1/1 token copy of itself for an additional two mana. If you pay the offspring cost, it gets you halfway to transforming Kuja and makes each noncreature spell burn your opponents for four damage with Kuja's damage doubling ability online.

Gleeful Arsonist

Gleeful Arsonist

Wizards are one of Magic's oldest and most prolific creature types, so while looking at cards for Kuja I found a lot of cards with strong abilities that also happened to be wizards. Gleeful Arsonist is one of those cards, punishing your opponents for casting their own noncreature spells and just so happening to receive the double damage buff from the transformed side of Kuja. It also has Undying, making it trickier to remove and dealing even more damage when it comes back.

Young Pyromancer

Young Pyromancer

Oh hey, another great card for spellslinger decks that also happens to be a wizard. Young Pyromancer is a classic EDH card, making a 1/1 elemental token whenever you cast an instant or sorcery. This deck plays a lot of noncreature spells to trigger its wizards, so this card will hopefully make a small army of disposable creatures to sacrifice or chump block with.

Tersa Lightshatter

Tersa Lightshatter

If you've played Standard since the release of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, you're probably already familiar with Tersa Lightshatter. This card, which happens to be a wizard, lets you play a random card from your graveyard when it attacks if you have Threshold. It also lets you fill your graveyard by rummaging when it enters and has haste so you can get value from it immediately if you meet its criteria. In a deck with lots of noncreature spells, especially instants and sorceries, it won't be too hard for Tersa to get you extra value from the graveyard, especially when it can also replay any creatures that happen to die.

Skullclamp

Skullclamp

Now that we've added in a couple of wizards, let's start looking for some support cards. I think that one of Kuja's strongest aspects is that if it doesn't transform, it creates a token every turn like a Bitterblossom or Black Market Connections. These tokens have 1 toughness, so Skullclamp seems like a pretty great way to draw a bunch of cards over the course of a grindy game. It also works well with our other token makers like Young Pyromancer if Kuja has already transformed.

Virtue of Courage

Virtue of Courage

Speaking of card draw, since we've added in a bunch of wizards that burn our opponents, let's also include a way to turn that damage into impulse draw. Virtue of Courage is a little high on the curve at 5 mana but can generate a lot of card advantage once we build up a board of Black mages. It also comes with a bit of removal on its adventure half, which can pick off small value creatures like Blood Artist or Llanowar Elves in the early game.

Artist's Talent

Artist's Talent

Noncreature spells are a vital part of any wizard-centric deck, and Kuja is no exception. Artist's Talent has three modes that all care about casting those noncreature spells, rewarding you by offering extra card selection and stocking your graveyard with its rummaging ability, a 1 mana discount on all noncreature spells, and eventually an extra two damage added to each instance of noncombat damage. It makes our black mage tokens stronger and helps us trigger them more each turn, making it a perfect fit for our wizard burn deck.

City on Fire

City on Fire

While our deck is focused around transforming Kuja, our opponents aren't likely to let a damage doubler sit around all game, so we need to have a backup plan. City on Fire is a great option: an 8 mana enchantment with convoke that triples all our damage. It makes great use of our Black mage tokens by tapping them to reduce its cost and triggering their ping ability when cast, then sits around and triples all our burn and combat damage. Slam this on the table and your opponents will wish they had saved their removal.

Chandra's Ignition

Chandra's Ignition

Chandra's Ignition is a scary card in EDH, and with a transformed Kuja on board it can be devastating. This card essentially turns one of your wizards into a bomb, dealing damage equal to its power to each other creature and each opponent. With a transformed Kuja, any wizard you target with this spell will deal double that damage instead, and wizards can get quite strong with abilities like prowess or with enough anthem effects.

And that'll do it for this 10 for 10 article. This is my first time building around wizards, so it was fun searching through three decades worth of these spellslingers. I encourage you to do the same if this deck interests you, and I wish you the best of luck!
