Top 5 Best White Cards in Tarkir: Dragonstorm

Reddit

White is a cornerstone of almost every deck I play in Magic: The Gathering. Overall, Tarkir: Dragonstorm included some absolute bangers for any player who enjoys playing white. I can't overstate just how powerful some of these cards are, so here are our favorite five.

Sunpearl Kirin

Every so often, a card comes along that really looks underwhelming but makes a major impact. Sunpearl Kirin is one of those cards that just came out of nowhere and immediately found a spot in most formats. For 1w you get a flying 2/1 creature that can be flashed in. What makes it really cool is that when it enters, you can return up to one nonland permanent to your hand.

Commander: Bounce has been popular in nearly every format. One of the interesting parts of how Sunpearl Kirin works is that with at least one other bounce card, you can set up a constant chain. It's cheap in many ways, but it's a ton of value.

Constructed: Sunpearl Kirin absolutely shines in this format. With the dominance of Esper (wub) Bounce, a cheap and reliable option to partner up with Nurturing Pixie was going to be popular. While this has been one of the more dominating decks in the Standard format, Sunpearl Kirin makes it so much more reliable.

Sealed: I need to tell you how I got destroyed in a draft event. My opponent had two Sunpearl Kirin and some creatures with endure effects. As they kept making spirits when casting their creatures, I was eventually overrun and never connected once.

Voice of Victory

Easily one of the best cards in all of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, Voice of Victory does a lot for a1w creature. As a 1/3 creature, it has mobilize 2, which will make two tapped and attacking warrior tokens when Voice of Victory attacks. That's pretty good on its own, but the additional ability that stops opponents from casting spells on your turn means no counters and no surprises.

Commander: Voice of Victory is a literal gem in the Commander format. Imagine if Grand Abolisher made two 1/1 tokens every time it attacked. It's also a little beefier than the tried and true big guy. I recommend running them both, but Voice of Victory has so much more upside!

Constructed: Now that there is a really good stax piece available in Standard, I can see Voice of Victory making an impact here. It's really taken off in Azorious (uw) Omniscience but Wizards just strapped a rocket to the back of Modern's Boros (rw) Energy.

Sealed: In a format that will generally be decided by which player can stop the other from casting the spells they want, Voice of Victory is an absolute bully. It's not as bad as another card that will be on the list, but stopping counters, bounces, and removing attackers is a hurdle that is hard to get around.

Clarion Conqueror

Would you believe me if I told you that one of the cheapest dragon cards at 2w is actually one of the nastiest pieces of stax we've seen in a long time? Clarion Conqueror is an absolute menace and can help its controller run away with the game. This 3/3 flying dragon turns off all activated abilities of artifacts, creatures, and planeswalkers. Ouch.

Commander: Aw, it's too bad that you can't use your Sol Ring or equip any equipment to your creatures. Vehicles? Don't even think about it. That planewalker ultimate ability you had in your back pocket? Gone. Clarion Conqueror should be an auto-include in any deck with White cards, as long as it isn't turning off your good stuff too.

Constructed: Clarion Conqueror is sitting pretty atop some very influential decks in both Standard and Modern. It simply turns off a lot of the best things that other powerful decks, like Dimir (ub) Frog in Modern or Dimir Midrange and Esper (ubw) Pixie, do in Standard.

Limited: Playing against Clarion Conqueror is an absolute nightmare in any Limited event. No equipment, to using any of the devotee cards for mana filtering. No combat tricks with creature abilities. You'd better hope you grabbed some effective removal or you'll be taking a loss real quickly.

Elspeth, Storm Slayer

In every Magic: The Gathering set there is at least one card that is THE card to get. In Tarkir: Dragonstorm that card is absolutely Elspeth, Storm Slayer. This 3ww planeswalker is a toolbox of things that is going to help her controller win the game. As a passive ability, she has a token doubler built in for just being on the board. Her loyalty abilities allow you to create a 1/1 soldier token, put a +1/+1 counter on every creature and give them flying, or destroy a target creature an opponent controls with a mana value of 3 or greater.

Commander: Let me tell you how absolutely crazy Elspeth, Storm Slayer is in Commander. All of those mobilize triggers? Doubled. Hare Apparent is going to just dump rabbits all over the board. Treasures and food tokens? All you can eat! She's putting in work like her divinity is on the line!

Constructed: In all honesty, planeswalkers don't see a ton of play in a lot of the 60-card formats. Yes, there are a few outliers like Kaito, Bane of Nightmares and Jace, the Perfected Mind. It does seem that Elspeth, Storm Slayer has found a nice comfy home in Azorious (wu) Control and will probably be hanging out there for a few years.

Sealed: Elspeth, Storm Slayer is a very hard card to get. However, if you end up with her, all you need to do on your side is just make sure you have enough endure or mobilize cards to take advantage of what she does. She synergizes extremely well with these cards.

Smile at Death

The last card on our list isn't currently making a major impact in all formats but it is a card that I think has a ton of potential upside. Smile at Death is an enchantment that costs 3ww which does seem a little spicy, but returns up to two target creatures with power 2 or less to the battlefield from your graveyard on your upkeep. Those creatures also get a +1/+1 counter.

Commander: This is where Smile at Death really has the best opportunity to shine currently. Put this in a deck with cards like Drannith Magistrate, Voice of Victory, or Delney, Streetwise Lookout, and you can just let the deck play itself.

Constructed: Currently, Smile at Death isn't a super optimal pick for most Constructed formats. Still, with Final Fantasy on the horizon and new cards being released all the time, there is absolutely an opportunity for this to rocket into relevancy overnight.

Sealed: (Smile at Death) can be a really big nuisance if you can build around it effectively. If you pick the right cards, you can set up a board state that will absolutely keep your opponents on the defensive. After all, outside of exiling those annoying two-power creatures, they'll keep coming back over and over!

When we look at Tarkir: Dragonstorm's White cards overall, some of the biggest impacts in Magic: The Gathering are here. With Clarion Conqueror, Voice of Victory and Elspeth. Storm Slayer, they may become color staples for the foreseeable future. If you haven't picked them up yet, do so before they are hard to get!
