The Five Best Grixis Commanders in Magic: The Gathering

Reddit

There's something beautifully cruel about Grixis. It's the shard of ambition, decay, and unholy brilliance - where the living serve the dead and the dead just won't stay quiet. Blue gives cunning, Black gives hunger, and red gives destruction which makes for a perfect recipe for Commander chaos.

In Grixis we have punishing draw engines to spell-slinging recursion and apocalyptic avatars, Grixis decks have always stood out for their spectacle and their ability to turn a friendly game into pandemonium. Today, we're counting down five of the best Grixis commanders in Magic: The Gathering, ranked by power, playstyle, and their enduring presence at Commander tables.

5. Nekusar, the Mindrazer

Nekusar, the Mindrazer

Nekusar, the Mindrazer, is the undisputed king of Wheel decks - or, if you've been on the receiving end, the patron saint of suffering.

At face value, Nekusar rewards card draw with punishment: every extra card your opponents draw translates into pain. Wheel of Fortune, Windfall, and Whispering Madness suddenly become burn spells that scale with table size. The classic combo pieces - Underworld Dreams, Teferi's Puzzle Box, and Forced Fruition - all push the same agenda: make them draw, make them bleed.

He's linear, yes, but beautifully so. Nekusar exemplifies what Grixis does best, which is to turn intellect into agony. You won't always make friends, but you'll absolutely make memories.

Key Cards: Wheel of Fortune, Howling Mine, Spiteful Visions

4. Abaddon the Despoiler

Abaddon the Despoiler

Straight from the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Abaddon the Despoiler turns every ounce of bloodshed into cascading madness.

His ability, Mark of Chaos Ascendant, transforms combat damage into free spells. Whenever your opponents lose life, you unlock a storm of cascading value, potentially chaining multiple high-impact plays in a single turn. Cards like Pestilence, Pyrohemia, and Blood for the Blood God become enablers for absolute mayhem.

The deck practically plays itself once it gets rolling: deal damage, cast spells, watch the board dissolve. Abaddon's Grixis color identity allows for powerful draw, removal, and recursion to keep the engine running.

He's the definition of chaotic energy - part commander, part roulette wheel. If you love decks that thrive on momentum and thrive even more when the table panics, Abaddon's your warlord.

Key Cards: Villainous Wrath, Descent into Avernus, Palace Siege

3. Sauron, the Dark Lord

Sauron, the Dark Lord

Power. Value. Villainy. Sauron, the Dark Lord brings all three in spectacular (and sinister) fashion.

He's an engine in himself: whenever opponents cast spells, you amass Orcs; whenever your Armies hit, the Ring tempts you; whenever you're tempted, you can draw and discard to sculpt your hand. The result? A deck that fuels itself through combat, spell-slinging, and clever recursion.

Ward - "Sacrifice a legendary artifact or creature" - keeps him notoriously hard to remove, while his seven-power body turns even passive turns into looming threats. Sauron's synergy with cards like The One Ring, Treason of Isengard, or simple draw/discard payoffs like Madness cards makes him a monster in both flavor and function.

He's less "combo chaos" and more "inevitable doom." Every play feels cinematic - fitting for Middle-earth's ultimate puppet master.

Key Cards: The One Ring, Saruman, the White Hand, In the Darkness Bind Them

2. Kess, Dissident Mage

Kess, Dissident Mage

Few Grixis legends are as synonymous with Commander mastery as Kess, Dissident Mage.

Once a premier control commander that ruled competitive tables in days past, Kess excels in spell-slinging decks that blend recursion and inevitability. Casting an instant or sorcery from your graveyard each turn means you're always up on value... and always one spell away from stabilizing or closing the game.

Classic builds lean on wheels, tutors, and control pieces like Counterspell, Toxic Deluge, and Demonic Tutor, all while reusing them for a second life through Kess's ability. More modern lists might lean into storm or reanimation, chaining rituals and draw spells before finishing with something like Aetherflux Reservoir or Thassa's Oracle.

She's elegant, consistent, and brutally efficient - a perfect expression of Grixis intellect and ambition. Kess doesn't scream chaos; she whispers inevitability.

Key Cards: Jeska's Will, Frantic Search, Underworld Breach

1. Kefka, Court Mage // Kefka, Ruler of Ruin

Kefka, Court Mage // Kefka, Ruler of Ruin

The newest Grixis monarch of madness arrives straight from Magic: the Gathering - Final Fantasy and Kefka, Court Mage immediately feels like the heir to Nekusar, the Mindrazer's throne.

When he enters or attacks, each player discards a card then you draw for each card type among the discarded. That's already an efficient draw engine with disruption baked in. But once you pay eight mana to transform him into Kefka, Ruler of Ruin, the real nightmare begins: "Whenever an opponent loses life during your turn, you draw that many cards."

It's like Nekusar and Sauron had a cackling lovechild. Pair him with pingers like Mayhem Devil, wheel effects, or mass burn like Price of Progress, and you'll draw your deck in one turn. With cards like Archfiend of Ifnir or Waste Not, his discard side becomes equally vile.

Kefka is everything Grixis aspires to be - twisted, theatrical, and utterly devastating. A card-draw engine, chaos conductor, and victory condition all in one flamboyant package.

Key Cards: Waste Not, Moment to Endurance, Geth's Grimoire

The Glory of Grixis

Grixis doesn't believe in mercy. It believes in control through cruelty, victory through intellect, and joy through mayhem. In Grixis, power always comes with a price... and you'll gladly pay it if it means the table burns brighter for it.
