Five Blue Decks for Spider-Man Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. Last week, I started my look at decks from the Marvel's Spider-Man Standard era that all feature the same color. I looked at White decks last week, so this week I'll be looking at decks that all feature Blue cards. Let's get started.

Mono-Blue Hydro Tempo

We'll get things started by taking a look at a Mono-Blue deck that features an interesting Villain. Let's take a look at the deck.

Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon

Hydro-Man, Fluid Felon is the Villain I mentioned before the deck list. While he is in play, he'll get a +1/+1 bonus for the turn whenever you cast a Blue spell. This happens regardless of whether the spell resolves or whether it's countered. That makes Hydro-Man a powerful attacker. Then, during your end step, Hydro-Man untaps and turns into a land that can tap for Blue mana. That makes things tricky for your opponent.

With so many creatures like Spectral Sailor and Floodpits Drowner that have flash, you'll easily be able to use the mana Hydro-Man can provide to get additional bodies onto the battlefield. Alternately, you can use that mana to cast any of the numerous instant spells in this deck. Whether you're countering your opponent's spell with Spell Stutter, or drawing extra cards with Opt, you're likely to have some way of using that mana to your benefit.

Azorius Auras

Next, I have an Azorius deck that features a common creature that can be a force to be reckoned with. Let's take a look at the deck.

Skyward Spider

Skyward Spider might just be a common card, but it has the potential to do great things. It has ward 2, providing it a bit of protection against targeted removal. It also has an ability that provides it with flying as long as it is modified. As you can see, this deck has a number of terrific auras that can be used to trigger this ability, making Skyward Spider an impressive threat.

Shardmage's Rescue offers you a bit of protection by providing hexproof on the turn it was cast. The added +1/+1 bonus is also a boon. Sheltered by Ghosts not only offers you some removal of your own, but provides a +1/+0 bonus, lifelink, and ward 2, which will stack with Skyward Spider's existing ward 2 ability. Finally, there's Ethereal Armor, which provides a +1/+1 bonus for each enchantment you control. It also provides the enchanted creature with first strike, making an already powerful threat even more dangerous.

Dimir Mill or Kill

The next deck I have for you features multiple routes to victory. Let's take a look at the deck.

Doomsday Excruciator
Riverchurn Monument

While this deck might only have a handful of creatures, it has one that can mill your opponent's deck of an incredible amount of cards. As long as you cast Doomsday Excruciator, it will exile all of the cards in your opponent's library except for their bottom six cards. Those cards that are exiled are done so face down, so your opponent won't know what they have lost.

While casting Doomsday Excruciator might not be easy due to its restrictive mana cost, this deck has the tools it needs to counter whatever malicious threats your opponent might have up their sleeve. Once you have Doomsday Excruciator in play, you can likely mill the remainder of their deck on the spot with Riverchurn Monument, or simply attack them from the air until their life is at 0.

Izzet Pirates

The next deck I have for you features a bunch of Pirates teaming up with a Dragon. Let's take a look at the deck.

Breeches, Eager Pillager
Realm-Scorcher Hellkite

While Pirates might not be known for their amazing synergy, Breeches, Eager Pillager does his best to encourage multiple Pirates to attack together. By doing so, you'll increase the number of options Breeches provides. Much of the time, you'll want to create a Treasure, but there's no bad choice to be made.

With those Treasure tokens you've created, along with some possible Map and Clue tokens as well, you should have no problems casting the big finisher for this deck, Realm-Scorcher Hellkite. Whenever possible, you'll want to cast it using bargain, discarding a Map or Clue token in the process. This will give you a 4/6 flying creature with haste. The extra man you get by using bargain can either be used to cast other threats or to activate Realm-Scorcher Hellkite's activated ability, dealing up to 2 points of damage to any target.

Simic Aggro

The final deck I have for you is a Simic deck that wants to overwhelm its opponent with a ton of creatures. Let's check it out.

Jackal, Genius Geneticist
Genemorph Imago

Jackal, Genius Geneticist offers you a way of multiplying the creatures you cast with his ability that creates copies of those creatures that have a mana value equal to Jackal's power. You'll then add a +1/+1 counter to Jackal. While this only works a few times before Jackal's power is higher than the mana value of all of the remaining creatures in this deck, you should get a lot of value from this. This makes Jackal a great blocker, willing to die so you can cast another copy starting the process again.

Genemorph Imago can help Jackal get bigger creatures into play more quickly with its landfall ability. By changing Jackal's power and toughness to 3/3, you'll be able to copy Surrak, Elusive Hunter or Sentinel of the Nameless City right away, instead of needing to build up Jackal's power slowly. Genemorph Imago also works well in conjunction with Hemosymbic Mite, giving you twice the boost (and then some) when Hemosymbic Mite becomes tapped.

Wrapping Up

While Blue decks are often known for their ability to counter the spells of other decks, this week's decks show that Blue isn't just a one-trick pony. Control decks might be where Blue shines, but by pairing Blue up with other colors, you open the door to aggro and combo decks as well. It's easy to see why Blue is often thought of as a great supporting color.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
