Five Blue Decks for Avatar Standard

Reddit

Hello everyone. It's almost the end of the year and, before you know it, Lorwyn Eclipsed will be here. That means it's time for me to start looking at some decks from our current Standard environment that all feature a specific color that you can use in the opening weeks of Lorwyn Eclipsed Standard. I'm starting with decks featuring Blue mana this time, so let's get started.

Mono Blue Tempo

We'll start things off with a deck that can react to whatever its opponent does with ease. Let's take a look at the deck.

Accumulate Wisdom
Three Steps Ahead
Agna Qel'a

This deck uses Lessons and counterspells like Three Steps Ahead to keep its opponent off guard. Additionally, many of the creatures in this deck have flash, allowing you to keep your mana open during your opponent's turn. They won't know whether you're going to counter their next spell or simply flash in a creature as a surprise blocker.

Agna Qel'a is a new land that you can use to help find what you need. By activating its non-mana ability, you'll be able to draw a card, and then discard a card. Doing this will allow you to filter through your deck to find whatever you need more quickly.

Azorius Flyers

The next deck I have for you adds White mana and a bunch of flying attackers. Let's take a look at the deck.

Aang, Swift Savior // Aang and La, Ocean's Fury
Air Nomad Legacy

This is another deck that wants to keep mana open during the opponent's turn to cast (or tease) counterspells. If you're not countering anything, you can use that mana to cast creatures with flash, using them as surprise blockers or simply casting them to avoid summoning sickness.

Every creature in this deck either has flying or a way to gain flying for the turn. This means against many decks, you can attack without fear of being blocked. It also means that every creature you control gets boosted while you have a copy of Air Nomad Legacy on the battlefield. Plus, this enchantment isn't legendary, so you can gain multiple +1/+1 boost by having extra copies in play.

Dimir Midrange

Up next, I have a deck for you that wants to win by getting in some unblockable damage. Let's take a look at the deck.

June, Bounty Hunter

June, Bounty Hunter cannot be blocked as long as you've drawn two or more cards this turn. Since you'll naturally draw one card at the beginning of your turn, you'll only need to be able to draw 1 additional card to trigger this ability. Luckily June has an ability that allows her to sacrifice other creatures for Clue tokens, which can then be sacrificed to draw a card.

With all of the sacrificing you'll be doing, it shouldn't be surprising to see a full playset of Obsessive Pursuit in this deck. This enchantment will also create Clue tokens for you, plus it will grant +1/+1 counters on a target attacking creature equal to the number of permanents you've sacrificed this turn. You can deal a ton of unblockable damage with June because of this.

Izzet Lessons

The next deck I have for you features a lot of the Lessons that Blue is known for. Let's check it out.

Sokka, Bold Boomeranger
Gran-Gran
Dragonfly Swarm

All of the Instant cards in this deck are Lessons. This is important for a few different reasons. You'll typically want to cast these spells until you have a minimum of 3 Lessons in your graveyard. If possible, though, try to play Sokka, Bold Boomeranger as early as possible to gain some +1/+1 counters when you play those Lessons.

By getting a minimum of 3 Lessons into your graveyard, you allow Gran-Gran to reduce the casting cost of any noncreature spells you cast by 1 mana. You'll also be able to cast Serpent of the Pass as if it had flash, while also getting a cost reduction equal to the number of noncreature, nonland cards in your graveyard. There's also Dragonfly Swarm, whose power is equal to the number of noncreature, nonland spells in your graveyard.

Simic Ramp

The final deck I have for you uses mana ramp to deal a lot of damage. Let's take a look at the deck.

Badgermole Cub
Skyserpent Seeker
Summon: Bahamut

This deck features a lot of ways to help provide you with additional mana each turn. Llanowar Elves, Badgermole Cub, and Enduring Vitality are just a few of these cards. There's also Skyserpent Seeker, who is able to get a couple of extra lands into play when you activate its exhaust ability.

With all of that mana, you'll work your way toward casting Summon: Bahamut. Not only is this Saga Dragon a massive flying creature, it's also removal and card drawing to boot. Plus, when it gets its fourth lore counter, it will deal damage to your opponent equal to the total mana value of each other creature you control. This will usually be enough to win the game on the spot.

Wrapping Up

As an experienced Magic player, I respect Blue decks. Whether you want to counter your opponent's spells, flash in creatures during your opponent's turn, or draw a bunch of cards, Blue decks have you covered. Even if you aren't a fan of Blue decks, you'll likely be able to find a deck here that appeals to you.

What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
