It’s November, and it means the Spectrum annual art book hits bookstore shelves across the nation. Magic submits dozens of artworks from the previous year to the annual, hoping a few are selected in the jury-selected art book. Magic has still almost twenty images selected. This is the twenty-second volume of the book: Spectrum 22.
The book is a must-see for any art director looking to pick up talent in the gaming industry. The unpublished category has some of the best art in the entire genre of Imaginative Realism, the fine art term for fantasy art. Magic is located in the “institutional section,” and while it costs money to submit images, Wizards itself feels it is important to showcase and promote its art, submitted the costs on behalf of the artists. Getting art into Spectrum is a huge deal and affects an entire artist’s career.
Enjoy this year’s nineteen selections; this is truly Magic’s best art of the past year!
The following image is unused on a card but is used in the original teaser trailer video shown at San Diego Comic-Con. I hope it makes it onto a promotional card sometime!
