Playing Mardu Green was a lot of fun, I have to admit. The feeling of piloting such a powerful deck, one that accumulates a ton of value over the course of the match, was exhilarating. Unfortunately, the problem with this deck is that it punishes mistakes pretty harshly. Everything in the deck, from the mana base to the removal to the threats, requires pretty specific sequencing that I was not able to get the hang of over the course of a few play-throughs. If grinding out every ounce of value is your thing, though, I highly encourage you to pick up the deck before rotation and give it a shot. It was definitely a learning experience, and the deck is very good. Just remember, the worst lands in your deck are Forest and Mountain!

This is the spot where I usually would suggest changes to the deck. However, since we are so close to rotation, I am looking forward. There are a few decks that are going to survive rotation, including R/G Ramp, the creature base of Hardened Scales, and the Esper Dragons shell, as well as one relatively new deck that crushed Day 1 of the Indianapolis Open last weekend in the hands of Kent Ketter. Mono-Red Eldrazi is largely “rotation-proof” (in the main deck, anyway) and features our favorite firebrand, Chandra, Flamecaller, as well as Modern powerhouses Reality Smasher, Thought-Knot Seer, and Pia and Kiran Nalaar.

This deck could see replacements in the sideboard from Shadows over Innistrad, as well as an increased number of versatile removal spells, such as Avacyn’s Judgment, to back up its powerful aggressive starts.

Take a look at your favorite decks. You may realize you will get to play it for six months longer! Until Shadows over Innistrad comes out on Magic Online, that is what I will be doing. See you next week!
