Hello happy folks! I hope your day is going super mega well! My last three articles featured my picks for the best of the various Clones and Copies cards, with the first week being the Top Clones, and then the Top Permanent Copy makers, and then the Top Temporary Copy Makers. All for multiplayer generally and Commander especially! Today, I wanted to finish with Commanders to lead your team of clones into battle. Clones that can Copy your Commander are great since having an extra copy of the creature you built your deck around is great. It's a popular archetype!
Honorable Mention
Adrix and Nev, Twincasters
This four-drop Simic 2/2 is small in size but has ward to protect itself while doubling your token making. How does this work here as the leader? Just use copy tokens like in my two lists above!
Volrath, the Shapestealer
This 7/5 5-drop with a three-color identity is next, with its ability to toss free -1/-1 counters onto things and then spend a mana to copy a dork with a counter on it. Note Volrath counts any type of counter, and you can copy your foe's stuff too. It's harder to set up, hence being here in the Honorable Mentions.
Orvar, the All-Form
This mono-Blue Hill Giant has Changeling, and then when you cast a spell that targets your stuff, you make a free copy that sticks around. It also copies anything, even lands! You will need a deck with self-targeting spells in Blue like Shadow Rift. That'll be weird, but it's pretty good when it works out!
Volo, Guide to Monsters
This final one before Top Five is this Simic 4-drop 3/2 that gives you a copy of creature spells you cast, as long as they don't share a creature type with a creature you control or in your graveyard. Sure, you need to build around it, but it's a cast trigger and will resolve even if the creature is countered.
#5. Riku of Two Reflections
The first Preconstructed Commander decks from Wizards of the Coast were three-color enemy wedges, and Riku led one. He has a smaller 2/2 body, but several copy effects all around. If you cast a spell, spend ![]()
to copy it(like Twincast). If a dork arrives, spend ![]()
to make a token copy. Love that thing much from both sides of the fence!
#4. Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds
This Naya three-drop has haste and an on-curve 3/3 body. It gives your nontoken creatures the ability to tap for no mana to copy a token dork that was made this turn. Create a big token and then tap your team to copy it many times over!
#3. Shaun, Father of Synths
This five-cost 3/4 Izzet dork has an attack trigger to make a copy of another attacking legendary dork, except it's not legendary and it's an artifact dork with the Synth type. When this is answered, you exile all those tokens. Love this in a deck full of attackers and legendary stuff and I ran this leading a Budget Commander Brew here - check it out!
#2. Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm
This on-curve flying and ward 2 6/6 Dragon in Temur makes an extra token copy of every nontoken Dragon entering your side of the battlefield, and they lose legendary status just like with Shaun above.
#1. Sakashima of a Thousand Faces
This is everyone's favorite Clone Commander, since it has partner and you can pair it up with one or two more colors and the legendary rule doesn't apply to you. Sakashima enters as a Clone of another creature you control, but retains all of its original abilities as well. I hate its power, but it needs to be here!
There we go! Any other thoughts? What are you most looking forward to punching out a deck with? Have an amazing day!
