The Top Ten Spirits for Commander

Reddit

Hello awesome folks! Wow do I have something fun for you today! Today I want to look at the best Spirits for casual table play formats like Commander and multiplayer. I once won a Creature Type battle tournament with Spirits as my type in Azorius. Ready? Let's do it to it!

Honorable Mention #1: Kami of False Hope

Kami of False Hope

Ah yes, everyone's favorite Fog Spirit, this 1-drop 1/1 common (Pauper, Peasant, Pauper Commander) can sac to Fog for no mana or tapping and then can get recurred with Sun Titan or soulshift. Love this 1-drop!

Honorable Mention #2: Tradewind Rider

Tradewind Rider

If this list were Top Ten Spirits for Standard, this would be a clear #1 since it dominated the era with multiple egregious decks like Trade-Geddon where you cast Armageddon and then bounced every new land with this, which I built, or Trade-Awake with Awakening to untap each turn all stuff for more bounces. But this is Commander, so it's just in my Honorable Mention section. You can tap it for no mana with two other dorks to bounce anything. That's great in token brews, aggro, tempo, with Awakening and Green dorks in that era like Wall of Blossoms, Birds of Paradise and Spike Feeder, and more. It's awesome possum!

Honorable Mention #3: Primordial Sage

Primordial Sage

Ah yes, everyone's favorite card draw cast trigger for dorks is here! This six-mana 4/5 is very strong with the card draw, and note it's not ETB, like Soul of the Harvest, but cast. So, it draws a card even if your creature is countered. Nasty card flow over time!

Honorable Mention #4: Junji, the Midnight Sky

Junji, the Midnight Sky

Let's turn to a recent addition to our Spirit grouping!!! This 5-drop on curve 5/5 with double evasion with flying and menace is our top Honorable Mention dork. Then it has the classic death trigger - this time in two options. Your foes can discard two each and lose two life or you can recur a non-Dragon to your battlefield from any graveyard and lose two yourself. Both of those are pretty strong from where I am sitting, since the first is a win-con and mass card advantage and the second is a strong Zombify effect. Nasty option here, and it's legendary for Command Zone purposes too.

10. Deadeye Navigator AND Brago, King Eternal

Deadeye Navigator
Brago, King Eternal

Now let's turn to my Top Ten and blink abuse! The Navigator costs six for a 5/5 body with soulbond and you can spend two to blink it away, recur with it's ETB trigger, and then soulbond again and repeat. It's a mana sink, and if your dork brings mana with it, like Priest of Gix, then you can make infinite blinks and then many more combos too. Then the Brago is a 4-drop legendary 2/4 with flying and a combat damage trigger. You blink any number of non-lands you control, not just creatures, so Ichor Wellspring in artifacts, Mulldrifter in creatures, or Flight of Fancy in enchantments will all work. Love these in the same deck, and Brago is a beloved Commander, leading a massive 7,667 decks over at EDHREC.com.

9. Keiga, the Tide Star

Keiga, the Tide Star

Another one that dominated Standard when legal is Keiga! This 6-drop 5/5 flyer has a death trigger to permanently steal an opposing dork. No one wants to kill it when it is on the battlefield, and then no one wants to block and trade or swing into it and trade either, so it's a brilliant rattlesnake for multiplayer formats like Commander. They might aim exile stuff at this instead like Swords to Plowshares effects. But Keiga has a very strong battlefield presence. As you can see, this Spirit can give you all of the wins.

8. Karador, Ghost Chieftain

Karador, Ghost Chieftain

This reanimation flavored 8-drop three color dork was once all the rage at leading a Commander deck and is still at 4852 (EDHREC.com). Why? Well, since this Centaur Spirit can let you cast a dork from your graveyard once per turn with normal spell rules for that. And this guy is cheaper for your dork count in your graveyard and that counts for Commander Tax too. He'll obviously love Black for Buried Alive and self-mill stuff and Zombify effects and then White for Karmic Guide, Green for Eternal Witness and self-mill too and loads more. This is still a strong powerhouse for this day and age!!!

7. Selfless Spirit AND Guardian of Faith

Selfless Spirit
Guardian of Faith

Next let's turn to aggro White rares to protect your team! The former costs two for a 2/1 flying body that can be sacrificed for no mana or tapping to give your team indestructible for the turn to save them from bad stuff like sweepers, targeted removal, surviving chump blockers or a mass attack. The latter costs three for a 3/2 flash, vigilance. Then when it ETBs, you can phase out any number of other dorks from the battlefield, also to answer the same stuff, but this will answer things the indestructible former one gives like mass bounce of Cyclonic Rift or Aetherize, or exiling of Farewell or -X/-X of Mutilate or sacrifices of Living Death. Love this self-saving pair loads!

6. O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami

O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami

Everyone's favorite five-color Spirit Commander. This 6-drop 6/6 flying and trample with double evasion is on curve and has a combat damage trigger like Brago, but with trample and flying to overcome defenses. And it's pretty simple. If that person attacked you, then you can exile one of their nonlands, so no one will attack you once this sis out since exiling removal is rough to deal with. Five-color legendaries tend to do quite well in those numbers but there are just 1127 of those leading decks (EDHREC.com) so that's pretty sad since it unlocks all colors and then plays keep away. Run this more!

5. Kodama of the East Tree

Kodama of the East Tree

Top 5 time! This legendary with partner Commander costs six for an on curve 6/6 with reach. When another permanent ETBS you can drop one for free from your hand for that mana value or less. Please note that there are no brakes here, lands trigger, there is no "once per turn" nothing. And it's a partner and legendary for massive build-around options, and is leading 8265 decks for all partners combined, nasty! It has to be here! There are two higher scoring legendary, but they are more for the 99, so this is the highest for Command Zone purposes.

4. Kira, Great Glass-Spinner

Kira, Great Glass-Spinner

This 3-drop 2/2 Wind Drake has the best protection ever! When someone goes to target your dorks with anything from a spell to ability it's countered the first time. This will basically give your team hexproof for most things, but people will combine removal and stuff to blow your stuff so you'll be up a card like trading Swords to Plowshares and Terminate for your dork. Great stuff! It's like she has "Give your dorks Ward: Discard" Kira is so great she is run in many older formats and folks love her loads!!!

3. Seedborn Muse

Seedborn Muse

Ah yes, everyone's favorite Muse cycle dork for Commander! Here they are at your 3 spot! This 5-drop 2/4 untaps all of your stuff each untap step like Awakening in the Tradewind Rider combo but just yours only so it's not as nice. But as a 5-drop with an undersized 2/4 body, it doesn't get as much play as it used to in general decks, but some still might think of it as their Top Spirit, but here it slots in at #3 for me. Shout out to Windborn Muse!

2. Karmic Guide

Karmic Guide

This also 5-drop 2 power dork with flying is next! This is the best Resurrection in White. As you can see, this has echo, and then pro Black. When it ETBs, this brings back any dead dork to your battlefield for free. Love this in blink, recursion, midrange, and loads more places. This is iconic at Commander and other kitchen table formats.

1. Kokusho, the Evening Star

Kokusho, the Evening Star

No legendary creature has dominated casual play as much as this when it was printed. It was banned in Commander. It was so dominant at all kitchen table formats that I was shocked it lost in the first week of the Best Legendary Dork of all time test that resulted in Akroma and got her reprint in Time Spiral. A death of this 5/5 6 drop flyer will drain 5 life from each foe. It's a win con, and like Keiga, it was a huge rattlesnake that no one wanted to trade, and it's amazing in 40 life formats like Commander and bonkers in 20 life ones like Five Color. Love this thing so much! It's awesome sauce!

And there we go with my list! I hope that you enjoyed it! What Top Spirits did I miss? Let me know and have an awesome day!
